What is Jihad? [by Peterpedant]

There are some disagreements between modern jihadism and traditional jihad theology: modern jihad is all defensive, as there is no caliph authorized to call offensive jihad... yet, and some assert that only the state authority can call jihad in any case. But these disagreements do not touch on the central point: that it is perfectly legitimate to wage religious war.

Also, one should bear in mind that the Qur'an was revealed gradually over a 22 year period. During this time, the Islamic community passed through three stages. In the beginning from 610 until 622, 'Allah' commanded restraint - Muhammad had only a handful of followers at that time and had no other choice - As the Muslims relocated to Medina (623-26), 'Allah' permitted Muslims only to fight in a defensive war, this was done on the flimsiest of pretexts to justify 'Ghazias' (raids) on Meccan caravans. However, in the last six years of Muhammad's life (626-32) when the Muslims had enough numbers, power and wealth through robbing caravans, 'Allah' suddenly permitted Muslims to break all their treaties and fight an aggressive war; first against polytheists, and later against monotheists like the Jews of Khaybar. Once Muhammad was given permission to kill in the name of God, he instigated battle.

Muhammad did not advocate suicide, instead he greatly praised martyrdom.

"A man came to the Prophet and said, 'Can you tell me where I will go if I get martyred?' The Prophet replied, 'To Paradise.' The man fought till he was martyred." Bukhari: Volume 5 Book 59 Number 377

Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 53:

Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet said, "Nobody who dies and finds good from Allah (in the Hereafter) would wish to come back to this world even if he were given the whole world and whatever is in it, except the martyr who, on seeing the superiority of martyrdom, would like to come back to the world and get killed again (in Allah's Cause)."

Also Narrated by Anas: The Prophet said, "A single endeavor (of fighting) in Allah's Cause in the afternoon or in the forenoon is better than all the world and whatever is in it. A place in Paradise as small as the bow or lash of one of you is better than all the world and whatever is in it. And if a houri (virgin) from Paradise appeared to the people of the earth, she would fill the space between Heaven and the Earth with light and pleasant scent and her head cover is better than the world and whatever is in it."

All the defenders of suicide bombing in the Islamic World will say "this is not suicide" the intention of the person is not to kill himself, the intention of the person is to kill others and that is sanctioned because it is Islamic jihad, and If in the process they are killed themselves thats an unavoidable consequence of their actions and they will be rewarded with the reward of martyrs in paradise.

Quran 9.111
Allah hath purchased of the believers their persons and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the garden (of Paradise): they fight in His cause, and slay and are slain: a promise binding on Him in truth, through the Law, the Gospel, and the Qur'an: and who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah? then rejoice in the bargain which ye have concluded: that is the achievement supreme.
