Some Socialist Party Lies For the Luton Demo

Commment on 'No to the racist EDL. Unite to fight the cuts!', from The Socialist

http://www.socialistparty.org.uk/issue/656/11084/02-02-2011/no-to-the-racist-edl-unite-to-fight-the-cuts

Steve Score proves EDL ‘racism’ by citing certain UAF/SWP fabrications. For example, he claims that the EDL chants ‘Muslims off our street!’ That is a lie! The actual chant is: ‘Muslim bombers off our streets’. Again, he cites: ‘Muslims - burn in hell!’ It is, in fact, this: ‘Muslim bombers – burn in hell’. Is this Leftist ‘lying for Justice’? I think it is.

Can’t these people stop using that phrase – ‘racist thugs’? Who are they trying to convince? Themselves or those who may not now buy the lie? Repeat the phrase ‘racist thugs’ enough times and the waverers will eventually believe it.

Another nice little ‘lie for Justice’ is that all EDL members blame all Muslims for Islamoterrorism. Who, exactly, ‘blames all Muslims for terrorism’? Is this just a leftist cliché with little or no content? In fact, the EDL blames Muslim extremists and the Koran/hadiths, etc. for Islamoterrorism, not ‘all Muslims’. Of course, these little lies will only work if people firstly believe the big lie that the EDL is itself racist – which it isn’t. Many EDL members, and many in the leadership, have black friends and mixed-race friends. EDL racism is simply untenable. And the Left knows this but it still needs to racialise the EDL and its message. That’s because it is far easier to fight racists or fascists than anyone else. After all, everybody hates racists and fascists. So half the battle against the EDL is already won if the SWP/UAF, etc. convince everyone that the EDL is indeed racist or fascist.

After brainwashing first-year students into believing that the EDL is racist and fascist, the next step must be to convince people that divide and rule strategies are being used by the EDL and also by the Government.

Ah! The Marxist dogma of divide and rule! Leftists are obsessed with the idea. The conspiracies run thick and fast in Leftist circles (especially if the Zionists/Jews are supposedly involved in them). The very attempt to somehow fuse the fight against the EDL with the fight against unemployment, etc. comes across as a non sequitur to the EDL. It’s certainly first-year-student-speak. Empty and hyperbolic as shit.

So here comes the expected socialist analysis of the EDL and the rest.

The EDL ‘is scapegoating Muslims’, etc. No. The EDL is simply not scapegoating Muslims - or anyone else - for the ‘three decades of cuts and privatisation by the Tories’. This man has a limited political vocabulary in that he sees everything through Marxist lenses. If anything, the EDL has no position whatsoever on these things. The EDL is not the BNP. The BNP does have a stance on such things. Again, I have never once heard an EDL speaker, at a demo, even so much as mention 'joblessness' or ‘bankers' crimes’. Clearly the writer is attempting to squeeze the EDL into his Marxist analysis of contemporary society – but it just doesn’t fit. Indeed, it sounds very first-year-studentish.

You cannot reason with such escapist logic. Socialism has it named and well-known bugbears as well as its perennial battles to fight. And if the EDL doesn’t fit into this rather large pile of Marxist shite, then it will still be pushed into it nonetheless.

So the EDL being Nazi, also means they are dividing the working class on behalf of bankers, etc. That is, the EDL is doing big bankers a huge favour by dividing the possibly-revolutionary working class. But why can’t someone be both pro-EDL and anti-big-banker? Or is that a little too incongruous and complex for the tiny socialist mind?

All we now have left is conspiracy! Conspiracy! And conspiracy! And underneath the Capitalist Conspiracy hides ‘the real causes of our problems’ – Capitalism. That is, platonic Capitalism with a capital ‘C’. That monocausal single-willed entity that has been turned into some kind of platonic entity - or even a being - by black-and-white Marxist minds. (However this reification of Capitalism, the Ruling Class, etc. is more Hegelian than platonic.)

What does Steve Score mean by challenging the EDL? Banning it? Imprisoning its leaders and as many EDL members as possible? Or does it not mean anything much?

Steve Score, of course, provides us with the answer or ‘alterative’ to all this racism, fascism and job-cutting. Indeed, a ‘socialist alternative can provide an answer’ for all issues. That’s the juvenile appeal. That’s the fantasy. That’s why so many students buy into it. Utopianism appeals to the young and the brainless.

We also have the Marxist Truth. The Truth, eh? The unvarnished anti-racist and anti-fascist Truth? The materially-conditioned Truth which hides beneath ideological super-structures and which only Marxists or Socialists can glean. Praise the socialist elite!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A GROUP of people sit chatting and eating in a fast food restaurant; men, women, children. Out of the blue, bricks start hitting the windows, hundreds of thugs come running past, directing their racist chanting at the diners. Children start crying. Suddenly the thugs burst in the door to attack whoever they meet first. [This was a terrible action carried out by people who claimed to be EDL but only came along for a scrap. That happens at most political demos; especially SWP-organised ones. The EDL has dealt with most of the offenders on this occasion.]

This is not 1930s Nazi Germany, this is Leicester 2010 and this kind of racist incident has been repeated at marches of the English Defence League (EDL) up and down the country over the last couple of years. [At last, a revolutionary socialist who has actually realised that ‘this is not 1930s Nazi Germany’. Many Trots and Socialists will try to convince you, for political reasons, that history is replaying itself. But, of course, the EDL is not a Nazi party. It is not even a party, strictly speaking.]

On their website the EDL have a "mission statement" claiming they are not racist, that they are only opposed to "Muslim extremism". But on the street demonstrations they have held up and down the country, the truth is revealed. [The Truth, eh? The unvarnished anti-racist and anti-fascist Truth? The materially-conditioned Truth which hides beneath ideological super-structures and which only Marxists or Socialists can glean.] They do not wait to discuss religious beliefs before they attack anyone they see as not 'English'. They chant deliberately provocative slogans like "Muslims off our streets". [That is a lie! The chant is, ‘Muslim bombers off our streets’.] Their leaders make statements on demos like "Muslims - burn in hell!"[Again, it has been ‘Muslim bombers – burn in hell’. Is this journalist ‘lying for Justice’? I think he is.]

They aim to blame all Muslims for terrorism, and all the other problems working class people face. [Who, exactly, ‘blames all Muslims for terrorism’? Is this just a leftist cliché will little or no content? The EDL blames Muslim extremists and the Koran for terrorism, not ‘all Muslims’.] Their anti-Muslim rhetoric is just the thin end of the wedge for a wider racism that divides working class people. [That would only be the case if you bought into the lie that the EDL is itself racist – which it isn’t. Many EDL members, and many in the leadership, have black and mixed-race friends. EDL racism is simply untenable. And the Left knows that but still need to racialise the EDL and its message.]

At a time when working class people of all religious backgrounds and none, and all ethnic makeup are under attack, when all of our public services are being devastated, when jobs are being decimated and living standards slashed, we need a mass united movement to fight back. Whose interests are served by those who attempt to divide us?[Ah! The Marxist dogma of divide and rule! Leftists are obsessed with the idea. The conspiracies run thick and fast. The very attempt to somehow fuse the fight against the EDL with the fight against unemployment, etc. comes across as a bit of a non sequiter to the EDL. It’s certainly first-year-student-speak. Empty and hyperbolic as shit.]

It wasn't Muslims who caused the banking collapse that sparked the recession; it isn't Muslims who are attacking jobs and services to pay off the super-rich. [No one has said that – certainly not in the EDL! Why can’t someone be both pro-EDL and anti-big-banker? Or is that a little too incongruous and complex for the small socialist mind?] It can only serve the interests of the ruling class to have attention diverted away from the real causes of our problems. [Conspiracy! Conspiracy! And Conspiracy! And underneath the Capitalist Conspiracy hides ‘the real causes of our problems’ – Capitalism. That is, platonic Capitalism with a capital ‘C’. That monocausal single-willed entity that has been turned into some kind of platonic entity - or even a being - by the black-and-white-only Marxist minds.]

But it isn't only Muslims the EDL have attacked. They heckled Swansea Trades Council's May Day march and criticised students protesting against cuts and fees.

The EDL must be opposed. Local communities have a right to defend themselves from racist thugs. [Can’t these people stop using that phrase – ‘racist thugs’? Who are they trying to convince? Themselves or those who may not now buy the lie? Repeat the phrase ‘racist thugs’ enough times and the waverers will eventually believe it.] Trade unions and anti-racist campaigners have to support them. We cannot let the EDL go unchallenged. [What do they mean by challenging the EDL? Banning it? Imprisoning its leaders and as many EDL members as possible? Or does it not mean anything much?]

There is a danger that some people, whose lives have been worsened by three decades of cuts and privatisation by the Tories, Liberals and New Labour, may believe the EDL's scapegoating. [The EDL is simply not scapegoating Muslims - or anyone else - for the ‘three decades of cuts and privatisation by the Tories’. This man has a limited political vocabulary in that he sees everything through Marxist lens. If anything, the EDL has no position whatsoever on these things. The EDL is not the BNP. The BNP does have a stance on such things. Again, I have never once heard an EDL speaker, at a demo, even so much as mention joblessness or ‘bankers' crimes’. Clearly the writer is attempting to squeeze the EDL into his Marxist analysis of contemporary society – but it just doesn’t fit. Indeed, it sounds first-year-studentish.] That is why, when opposing the EDL, we need to put forward an argument for jobs, homes and services, not racism. [You cannot reason with such escapist logic. Socialism has it named and well-known bugbears as well as its perennial battles to fight. And if the EDL doesn’t fit into this rather large pile of Marxist shite, then it will still be pushed into it nonetheless.]

A socialist alternative can provide an answer on those issues. [Indeed, a ‘socialist alternative can provide an answer’ for all issues. That’s the juvenile appeal. That’s the fantasy. That’s why so many students buy into it. Utopianism also appeals to the young and the brainless.] The EDL claim to defend the 'English' working class, but they actually hide the real causes of our problems. We need a real mass workers' party that can unite all working class people to defend ourselves and our living standards. [Blah, blah, blah.]
