EDL calls off protest in Wembley [Harrow Observer]

- June 24 2010, by Tara Brady

A PROTEST organised by the rightwing English Defence League has been scrapped.

The group, which tours the country staging demonstrations, was planning a rally in Wembley against a conference organised by a Muslim charity.

It was recruiting members via the internet to take part in the demonstration outside Wembley Arena on Saturday (June 26).

But on social networking site, Facebook, it now says that it will be taking the rally to Barking where the British National Party are standing in a by-election.

Brent and Harrow Unite Against Fascism jumped into action last week and said they would stage its own counter-protest if the rally went ahead.

The conference was organised by Muslim charity, Al-Khair Foundation.

The Muslim doctor who was due to talk at the conference, Dr Zakir Naik, was banned from entering the country by Home Secretary Theresa May on Friday (June 18) which may result in the conference being called off or he may appear via video link.

EDL was unavailable for comment.
