Angry clashes in Whitechapel as 'violent mob' gathers at mosque [East London Advertiser]

- 21 June 2010

HUNDREDS of 'volatile' people gathered outside the East London Mosque, attacking police officers and causing violent disorder on Sunday in Whitechapel.

More than 300 young men gathered - some with their faces covered - outside the mosque at around 12.30pm.

Police believe they were there in response to rumours that the EDL (English Defence League) were planning to protest.

Earlier, a 1500 strong march organised by Unite Against Fascism had passed off peacefully, setting off from Stepney Green Park and finishing at Altab Ali Park.

But the mob that had gathered outside the mosque - separately to the march - rapidly turned violent.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Police officers were attacked by the crowd at points throughout the afternoon.

"One member of the public was attacked at random by members of the crowd as those gathered surged up and down the Whitechapel Road."

Police praised community leaders and officials from the mosque for their help calming the mob.

There has been one arrest so far for assault.
